Bike Portland has an update on Metrofiets, the project to build a Bakfiets-type cargo bike in America. Me and my wife have had a crush on the Bakfiets bike for a while now. Our neighborhood is really bike friendly, and there is a good chance that Deven will be attending school a few blocks away. It would be great to take him to school every morning in one of these. The crush was quickly quelled when we looked at the whopping $3000 price tag. The Dutch-built Bakfiets are also pretty hard to find in the US. It’s difficult to commit to something in that price range when you have to travel all the way to Portland to look at one. Hopefully, Metrofiets comes up with an alternative that’s financially justifiable for the rest of us. They’re hoping to get the first bikes on the road in the fall.
